The nomination process for the Rajya Sabha by-elections in Andhra Pradesh concluded on Tuesday with key political moves setting the stage for an intriguing electoral battle. TDP candidates Sana Satish and Beeda Mastan Rao, along with BJP’s R Krishnaiah, filed their nominations as alliance candidates under the NDA banner.
The by-elections are scheduled for December 20, with results to be declared the same day. In a show of strength, 40 MLAs from the NDA alliance assembled at the Andhra Pradesh Assembly to support the three Rajya Sabha candidates. With a minimum of ten MLAs required to back each nominee, the turnout signaled a calculated effort to consolidate support. The upcoming by-election comes after Mopidevi Venkataramana, Beeda Mastan Rao, and R Krishnaiah, who were previously elected to the Rajya Sabha under YSRCP’s banner, resigned following the party’s defeat in this year’s Assembly elections.
Their exits from YSRCP and subsequent shifts to TDP and BJP have added a new dynamic to the political landscape. Interestingly, Mopidevi Venkataramana was not re-nominated, with TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu opting instead for Sana Satish, a controversial figure whose selection has sparked debates within the party. Party veterans, including Yanamala Ramakrishnudu, had reportedly expressed long-standing aspirations for a Rajya Sabha berth, making Naidu's decision a topic of discussion among political observers.
Speaking to the media after filing his nomination, BJP candidate R Krishnaiah expressed gratitude to CM Chandrababu Naidu, minister Nara Lokesh, and deputy CM Pawan Kalyan for their support, asserting that his focus would remain on securing BC reservations in legislatures. “YSRCP gave me limited opportunities to voice BC issues in Parliament. My move to BJP ensures a stronger platform to fight for the rights of BCs,” said Krishnaiah.
He clarified that the BJP was not new to him, saying, “I have never worn the scarf of any other party. BJP is the only party I truly align with.” The Rajya Sabha by-election in Andhra Pradesh coincides with elections for one seat each from Odisha, West Bengal, and Haryana. The results of these elections could have wider implications for the NDA’s standing in the Upper House.
