India missed a golden chance to enter the hockey final of the Olympics for the first time in 44 years. They went down 2-3 to Germany in a closely fought semifinal at the Paris Games on Tuesday.
The Indians started strongly and dominated the early exchanges before the Germans regrouped. It was a great opportunity for India to reach their first Olympic final since the 1980 Games, but Germany dashed their hopes with a decisive goal in the final quarter.
Harmanpreet Singh (7th) and Sukhjeet Singh (36th) scored for India, while Gonzalo Peillat (18th), Christopher Ruhr (27th), and Marco Miltkau (54th) were the scorers for Germany. India will now play against Spain in the bronze medal match, while Germany will face the Netherlands in the final.
India started well, scoring the first goal of the match through Harmanpreet, but Germany equalized and then took the lead in the second quarter. India’s goals came from penalty corners, with Sukhjeet converting in the 36th minute. Despite earning 11 penalty corners, India only converted one, while Germany secured four and made the most of their chances.
In the final quarter, Germany delivered a decisive blow with a goal from Miltkau, ending India’s hopes of reaching the final.
