BJP's Purandeswari demands autonomy for temples VHP leaders criticize govt control

BJP AP president and Rajahmundry MP Daggubati Purandeswari voiced her concerns over the increasing attacks on temples

BJP AP president and Rajahmundry MP Daggubati Purandeswari voiced her concerns over the increasing attacks on temples and called for granting autonomy to the temples to protect their sanctity. Speaking at a Hindu Sankharavam meeting at Laila Green Meadows, Gannavaram, she emphasized the need to safeguard Hindu traditions and religious practices. Purandeswari expressed that the number of pagans entering temples has risen, underlining the urgent need to protect temples from such intrusions.

The meeting was attended by VHP national representatives, BJP leaders, Mathadhipas, Peethadhipas, and Swamijis, all of whom rallied behind her call for temple protection and religious preservation. Former chief secretary L V Subramaniam criticized the 1987 Endowment Act, alleging it had become a curse for the temples and weakened their functioning. He claimed that the Act violated the rights of priests and contributed to the decline of the temple system.

VHP national president Alok Kumar took a historical stance, accusing the East India Company of taking control of temples in 1817 to undermine Hindu society. He stated that governments have continued to dominate temples, stripping them of their rightful management, with restrictions that other institutions do not face.

He particularly criticized the political interference in the Tirumala Venkanna Temple, claiming that political agendas have tarnished the temple’s sanctity. Kumar called for the removal of non-religious people from temple management and the establishment of temple autonomy. Ram Janmabhoomi Tirtha Kshetra Treasurer Govind Devgiri Maharaj echoed the sentiment, asserting that temples are not merely places of worship but sacred abodes of God.

He emphasized the importance of self-management of temples across the country, drawing a parallel with the independent management of the Ram Janmabhoomi in Ayodhya. Maharaj stated that the Hindu community must come together to ensure the protection and rightful governance of temples. The gathering concluded with a call for unity in securing temple autonomy and protecting the rights of Hindu devotees and traditions. Ends//
