TDP seeks State authority on non-Muslim representation in Waqf Board
The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) is set to propose an amendment to the Waqf Board Amendment Bill 2024, seeking to leave the inclusion of non-Muslims in State Waqf boards to the discretion of respective State governments.
As the Lok Sabha begins discussions on the bill, attention is focused on whether it will secure parliamentary approval. The TDP, along with its NDA ally Janata Dal (United), has expressed support for the proposed amendments. However, sources indicate that the TDP, led by Chandrababu Naidu, will advocate for flexibility regarding non-Muslim representation in State Waqf boards.
While backing most provisions of the bill, including mandatory participation of women, the TDP is firm on its proposal for state-level discretion on board composition. The party has issued a three-line whip to its MPs, ensuring full attendance during the debate.
