On the occasion of World AIDS Day, Dr. A Siri, the project director of AP SAX, highlighted alarming statistics regarding HIV infections in Andhra Pradesh. An estimated 3.25 lakh people are currently living with HIV in the State, with new cases predominantly affecting the youth. Speaking at a large-scale awareness event organized by AP SAX in Vijayawada, Dr. Siri stressed the urgency of the situation.
"Approximately 2.75 lakh individuals are receiving treatment for HIV, but there are still about 50,000 people who are not yet on treatment," Siri stated. The event, themed "Take the Right Path," aimed to promote awareness about HIV prevention, treatment, and the importance of regular testing. Dr. Siri revealed that nearly 20,000 young people in the State are infected with HIV, with a concerning increase in new cases among this demographic.
Efforts to combat HIV include the establishment of ART (Antiretroviral Therapy) centers, ensuring that no person is more than 50 kilometers away from one. The State’s ambitious goal is to eliminate HIV by 2030, with continuous efforts toward spreading awareness and providing accessible treatment options.
