Neeraj Chopra, a prominent figure in Indian athletics, will be aiming to make history in the javelin event at his second Olympics. His goal is to clinch another gold medal, showcasing his remarkable consistency despite battling a persistent adductor niggle this season.
The qualifications round is scheduled for Tuesday, and it is anticipated that Neeraj will advance to the finals on August 8. If Neeraj secures a top podium finish, he will join an elite group of athletes as the fifth man in Olympic history to defend his title and also become the first Indian to win two gold medals in an individual event at the Olympics. Although he has participated in just three events this year, the 26-year-old world champion has displayed impressive form, especially given the underwhelming performances of his global competitors.
Despite his temporary setback in May and subsequent withdrawal from a competition, Neeraj has made a strong comeback and his coach has assured that his fitness is not a concern. Neeraj’s main rivals in the men’s javelin event include Tokyo Olympics silver medallist Czech thrower Jakub Vadlejch, Germany’s Julian Weber, and former world champion Anderson Peters.
Another Indian in contention, Kishore Jena, has struggled to achieve significant distances in his throws. Neeraj is expected to uplift the Indian athletics contingent, which is yet to make a mark in the ongoing edition of the Olympics.
