The Supreme Court has asked for a response from the Centre regarding a plea that challenges the guidelines which currently prevent transgenders, gay individuals, and sex workers from donating blood.
Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and his bench issued notices to the Union government, National Aids Control Organisation, and National Blood Transfusion Council.
The plea was filed by activist Sharif D Rangnekar, who is contesting the 2017 guidelines that exclude transgender persons, men who have sex with men (MSM), and female sex workers from donating blood.
These guidelines permanently defer these groups from being blood donors due to their higher risk of HIV, hepatitis infections, or Transfusion Transmissible Infections (TTI).
