The popular Korean survival drama series “Squid Game”, which became the most-watched series on Netflix upon its release in 2021, is set to return with its second season on December 26, as announced by the streaming platform. The third and final season of the series will premiere in 2025. Hwang Dong-hyuk, the director, writer, and executive producer of the show, expressed his excitement for the new season in a note, stating, “I am thrilled to see that the seed that was planted in creating a new Squid Game grow and bear fruit through the end of this story.
We’ll do our best to make sure we bring you yet another thrill ride. I hope you’re excited for what’s to come.” The original cast, including Lee Jung-jae, Lee Byung-hun, Wi Ha-jun, and Gong Yoo, will be reprising their roles, and the new season will also feature several top Korean stars. Netflix accompanied the announcement with an exciting teaser of a track race, hinting at a new game for survival. The second season is set three years after the events of the first season, with the protagonist, Gi-Hun, determined to find the people behind the deadly competition.
The new season will introduce Yim Si-wan, Kang Ha-neul, Park Gyu-young, Lee Jin-uk, Park Sung-hoon, Yang Dong-geun, Kang Ae-sim, Lee David, Choi Seung-hyun, Roh Jae-won, Jo Yu-ri, and Won Ji-an as new additions to the cast. The show’s first season, released on September 17, 2021, gained immense popularity and became the most-watched Netflix series of all time, with 265.2 million views. Additionally, Hwang Dong-hyuk made history at the 74th Primetime Emmys by becoming the first Asian to win Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series.
