Mohanlal’s Thudarum Breaks Records and Gains Positive Reviews

Just two months after the release of L2: Empuraan, Mohanlal’s latest film Thudarum hit theaters yesterday in Malayalam and today in Telugu. While the buzz is relatively low in the Telugu market, the film has already set a new record in Kerala, selling over 4 lakh tickets in a single day on BookMyShow. Another highlight of the film is the return of senior actress Shobana, who plays Mohanlal’s wife after nearly two decades.

From its very first screening, Thudarum has garnered positive reviews, which has significantly boosted its word of mouth and box office collections. Some are even daring to compare it to the iconic Drishyam. Will Thudarum live up to that standard? Only time will tell.

Thudarum is a family thriller, much in the vein of Drishyam. It follows Benz (Mohanlal), who rents out his old black Ambassador car for driving jobs. His family — wife, son, and daughter — mean everything to him. However, an unexpected incident forces Benz to assist the police, and he unwittingly becomes entangled in a crime he didn’t commit. What starts as a simple favor quickly spirals into a nightmare, upending his life and endangering his loved ones, while society brands him a criminal. As the plot unfolds with unpredictable twists, Benz’s desire for revenge sets the stage for the real story.

While the first 40 minutes are a bit slow, the pace picks up after that, with the screenplay delving into the theme of honor killings. Director Tarun Moorthy keeps the narrative engaging, building suspense all the way to the climax. Though the main twist might be guessable midway, the final reveal offers a shocking twist in true Sukumar-style fashion.

With Jakes Bejoy’s evocative background score and strong performances from the cast, Thudarum proves to be a gripping watch. For fans of Malayalam crime thrillers, this one is certainly worth checking out.
