Malayalam Film Industry Grapples with Drug Controversies: Director Khalid Rahman Arrested
The Malayalam film industry is once again in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons, as drug-related issues continue to plague the industry. The recent controversy surrounding actor Shine Tom Chacko was just the beginning, and now, director Khalid Rahman—known for his hits Alipuzha Jinkhana and Thallumaala—has been arrested in a drug case, causing a massive stir.
Late last night, around 2 AM, Khalid Rahman, along with director Ashraf Hamza and a third individual, Shalif Mohammed, were arrested by Kerala police. The police conducted a raid at an apartment near Gosree Bridge in Kochi, owned by cinematographer Sameer Thahir, where they discovered 1.6 grams of hybrid marijuana.
Local media reports suggest that the three individuals were granted station bail. However, given the seriousness of the charges, they are likely to face further legal scrutiny. The raid, which followed a tip-off, has ignited heated discussions within the Malayalam film industry.
This incident highlights the alarming rise in drug misuse within the industry. Not long ago, actress Vincy’s accusations led actor Shine Tom Chacko to issue a public apology, and the film association warned him that any future mistakes could lead to a ban.
Khalid Rahman’s involvement in such a case is particularly disappointing, given his promising career trajectory. Many are criticizing the stark contrast between the anti-drug messages portrayed in films and the actions of some film personalities off-screen.
Veteran figures like Mammootty, Mohanlal, Priyadarshan, and Fazil have built illustrious careers without controversies, yet it seems that some newer filmmakers are heading down the wrong path early in their careers. This trend has many concerned that such incidents could tarnish the reputation of the Malayalam film industry.
