This information was provided to the Parliament on Tuesday by Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary. BCCI, the governing body for cricket in India, is registered under the Tamil Nadu Societies Registration Act, 1975, and is considered an autonomous body.
Chaudhary stated that services related to admission to sporting events like the Indian Premier League attract a 28% GST. Additionally, he mentioned that BCCI’s tax exemption under Section 11 of the Income Tax Act has been denied by the Income Tax department, and the matter is currently under legal consideration. Furthermore, Chaudhary clarified that BCCI does not receive any grants from the Ministry of Sports.
In response to a different question, he also mentioned that from July 2017 to June 2024, Central Tax formations in Gujarat had booked 13,494 cases of GST evasion, involving an amount of about Rs 52,394 crore, and leading to the arrest of 214 individuals.
