In a significant shift in the telecom landscape, the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) Andhra Pradesh Circle has reported a surge in new subscribers, with 1 lakh SIM activations in the past 23 days. This comes in the wake of recent tariff hikes by major private telecom operators such as Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, and Vodafone Idea (Vi), which have driven many users to seek more affordable alternatives. BSNL’s announcement, made via its X handle, highlights the state-owned operator’s competitive edge in the market. While private operators have increased their tariffs by an average of 15 – 25 percent, BSNL continues to offer affordable recharge plans, making it an attractive option for budget-conscious consumers.

The tariff hikes by private companies, which took effect on July 3 and 4, sparked widespread dissatisfaction among users. Hashtags like ‘BSNL ki ghar wapsi’ and ‘BoycottJio’ trended on social media as consumers voiced their displeasure. According to a reports, lakhs of people have switched to BSNL across the country using MNP since the tariff increases, with the company gaining around 2.5 million new connections overall.

The most significant price hike was seen in annual data plans, with an increase of Rs 600. For instance, Airtel and Reliance’s annual packs with 365 days of validity now cost Rs 3,599, while BSNL offers a plan with 395 days of validity and the same amount of data (2GB/day) for Rs 2,395. BSNL’s range of monthly plans, priced between Rs 107 and Rs 199, includes options like the Rs 229 plan, which offers unlimited data, voice calls, and access to select OTT apps. BSNL’s 4G services, launched in Chittoor District in May, are expected to roll out across Andhra Pradesh soon.

The company recently achieved a milestone by bringing 1,000 sites online as part of its 4G saturation project. Union Minister of Communications, Jyotiraditya Scindia, has announced the establishment of a performance monitoring unit to oversee the rollout of BSNL’s 4G services. For those looking to switch to BSNL, obtaining a Unique Porting Code (UPC) is straightforward. Simply send an SMS to 1900 in the format ‘Port <10 digit mobile number>’ (e.g., PORT 8888888888). Prepaid mobile subscribers in Jammu & Kashmir should call 1900.

The UPC is valid for fifteen days in most areas, and thirty days in Jammu & Kashmir, Assam, and North East licensed areas. Customers can also visit a BSNL Customer Service Centre, authorized franchisee, or retailer to request mobile number porting
