A massive fire at a fireworks manufacturing unit in Kailasapatnam village of Kotavuratla mandal claimed the lives of eight workers and left six others critically injured on Sunday. The incident occurred around 3 km from the Kotavuratla mandal headquarters.
According to police, 15 workers were present at the unit when the fire broke out. The deceased have been identified as Tata Babu (45), Yadi Govind (45), Dadi Rama Lakshmi (38) of Rajpet, Nirmala (38) of Samarlakota, Puram Papa (40), Venu Babu (40) of Choduvada, Senapati Baburao, and Manohar (30) of Visakhapatnam. All were reportedly working as labourers at the unit.
Local residents alerted the police and fire services immediately after the explosion. Firefighters managed to bring the blaze under control, and the injured were initially rushed to a nearby hospital before being shifted to Narsipatnam for better treatment. Two of the injured are said to be in critical condition.
Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu expressed shock over the incident. He spoke to Home Minister Vangalapudi Anitha, the Collector, and the Superintendent of Police to get updates on the situation. Officials briefed him on the status of the injured and confirmed the deaths of six individuals. The CM is closely monitoring the situation.
District collector Vijay Krishnan has ordered an inquiry into the incident. Senior police officials who visited the scene confirmed that the unit held a valid government license. A case has been registered, and police are questioning eyewitnesses to determine the cause of the fire.
