AP High Court Grants Relief to Ram Gopal Varma in Caste-Tension Case
Renowned filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma has received relief from the Andhra Pradesh High Court, which has directed the police not to take any action against him for six weeks. The case against Varma was filed over allegations that his film, Kamma Rajyamlo Kadapa Reddlu, incited caste-based tensions.
Case Background The complaint was lodged by Mangalagiri resident Bandaru Vamsikrishna, leading to the Andhra Pradesh CID registering a case against Varma. In response, the director filed a quash petition in the High Court, seeking dismissal of the case.
Varma’s Defense During the hearing, Varma argued that the case was politically motivated and the allegations were baseless. He emphasized that the film had been released in 2019 only after receiving approval from the Censor Board. He also questioned the timing of the complaint, pointing out that the case was filed five years after the film’s release, hinting at ulterior motives.
High Court’s Decision After reviewing Varma’s petition, the High Court ruled in his favor, granting him temporary relief and directing the authorities not to take action for six weeks.
