Robin Uthappa, former Indian cricketer and member of the 2007 T20 World Cup-winning team, made sensational remarks regarding Yuvraj Singh’s premature retirement from international cricket. Uthappa claimed that Virat Kohli, who was the captain at that time, indirectly played a role in ending Yuvraj’s career by not offering the necessary support upon his return after recovering from cancer.
“Yuvraj Singh fought cancer and came back. He played a pivotal role in India’s two World Cup victories. When a player of such caliber is trying to return to international cricket after defeating a life-threatening illness, the team captain must support him. We all knew that his lung capacity had decreased due to cancer. Yes, as a captain, maintaining fitness standards is important, but exceptions can always be made in special cases. Yuvraj Singh deserved such an exemption. He not only won World Cups but also battled cancer and came back. No one told me this—I observed it myself,” Uthappa said during an interview with Hindi news media outlet ‘Lallantop.’
Yuvraj Singh is regarded as one of India’s finest limited-overs cricketers. He played a crucial role in India’s 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup triumph under the leadership of MS Dhoni. Yuvraj also played a key role in India’s 2007 ICC T20 World Cup win, famously hitting six sixes in an over against England. However, his career took a downturn when he was diagnosed with cancer.
After successfully battling the disease, Yuvraj made a remarkable comeback, even scoring a century in an ODI against England. Despite his efforts, he struggled to perform in the 2017 Champions Trophy, leading to his exclusion from the national team. The selectors gradually overlooked him, and in 2019, Yuvraj announced his retirement from international cricket.
