Resul Pookutty, the Oscar-winning sound designer, has been nominated for the prestigious 72nd Annual MPSE Golden Reel Awards for his work on The Goat Life. It’s not every day that you find yourself being nominated for one of the most prestigious awards in the world of sound design—especially not while navigating the rush of a flight back home. For Resul Pookutty, this moment came just after landing from Dubai when he was greeted with a screenshot of his nomination for the 72nd Annual MPSE Golden Reel Awards. The recognition? His work on Aadujeevitham: The Goat Life, which has been nominated for a prestigious sound editing award, an achievement that had Pookutty jumping with joy. But for him, this award means much more than a personal victory—it’s a message to the film industry about the value of sound.
'Bigger than the Oscars', says Resul Pookutty
"To be recognised by your peers is the biggest honour," Pookutty says, referring to the Golden Reel nomination. Unlike other awards, where the judging panel might not always have an in-depth understanding of the craft, this nomination is all about sound professionals assessing the best in the world. And Resul Pookutty’s surprise and excitement are evident. “This is bigger than the Oscars. It's not just some people who don't know about the craft or know about the technical and the work judging you. So this is very serious in that respect. The recognition has much more weight than anything else," he told Zoom.
Sound Design: A Silent Hero
When we asked the superstar of this domain about what this recognition means for the sound design community in India as Prithviraj Sukumaran's The Goat Life is the only Indian film nominated in this category. Oscar-winning sound designer Resul is quick to shed light on a critical issue—the often underappreciated role of sound in Indian cinema.
He explained, "The sound community in India are the most silent people working in the film industry. And the sound is something that we find in the cinema experience, which very few producers and directors understand. I'm using it to the fullest. The sound is always lived upon. And if anything goes wrong, we are the first to blame. So, for example, if you look at the Kanguva controversy. When I saw people where the normal audience talking badly about the sound of the film, I could really hear inside. Probably people are now aware of the sound of the craft when nobody even knew about it. So in that way, it is a representation of the entire sound fraternity for me."
"That we are not second-hand technical tools. We are second to none. And if we desire to do work, we can do world-class work," he proudly declares.
