Anil ‘Gadar’ Sharma’s Vanvaas has opened poorly, but the collections are expected to get better over the weekend.
According to cinema exhibitor Roshan Singh from Bihar, the emotional story of an old patriarch being abandoned in Varanasi by his family is not what audiences expect from Anil Sharma. “Anil Sharma has the Gadar reputation to live up to. There is a lengthy action sequence in Vanvaas where the younger hero (Utkarsh Sharma) fights kidney racketeers. It is so jarring.I can understand Anil Sharma’s predicament regarding the action. Dalo toh musibat nahin, dalo toh aur bhi musibat.”
Cinema manager Kumar Abhishek attributes the weak opening to several factors. “Vanvaas has released when Pushpa is still very strong. Nana Patekar is excellent in the film. But he has no face value anymore. In addition, the high-profile animation film Mufasa, which has voice value with Shah Rukh Khan dubbing, has been released. Mufasa collections are also on the lower side. But slightly better than Vanvaas. The good news about Vanvaas is that those who have seen it have really liked it. So the word of mouth will enhance the collections over the weekend.’
In Vanvaas, Nana Patekar plays Deepak Tyagi, the mentally unsound patriarch who spends all his time daydreaming about his dead wife. After being abandoned by his children and their wives in Varanasi, Tyagi, who suffers from what seems to be advanced dementia, befriends a mischievous tourist volunteer, Veeru. The Nana Patekar-Utkarsh Sharma sequences, especially their drunken revelry, have a dash of the Bachchan-Rishi bacchan alia . The duo is easygoing and fluent together.
The director, Anil Sharma, is confident Vanvaas will get the audience it deserves. “It was never meant to create a gadar at the box office. But Vanvaas will get its audience.”
