Telangana renames Potti Sriramulu Telugu University

Chief Minister Revanth Reddy announced that Potti Sriramulu Telugu University will be renamed after Suravaram Pratap Reddy. Minister Damodara Rajanarsimha introduced the name change bill in the Assembly on Monday. Addressing the House, the Chief Minister stated that the decision had been under discussion in previous legislative sessions and was now being formalized.

Revanth Reddy clarified that the name change does not diminish the sacrifices of Potti Sriramulu, whose contributions will always be remembered. He emphasized that Potti Sriramulu University continues to exist in Andhra Pradesh and that Telangana has the right to honor its own historical figures. He pointed out that several institutions in the State have already been renamed to reflect Telangana’s heritage, citing examples such as Professor Jayashankar Agricultural University, Konda Laxman Bapuji Horticulture University, and PV Narasimha Rao Veterinary University.

The Chief Minister defended the decision as part of a broader effort to recognize those who played a significant role in Telangana’s history. He criticized attempts to politicize the move and accused some leaders of creating misconceptions for political gain.

Revanth Reddy also drew a parallel with the renaming of the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Stadium in Gujarat after Prime Minister Narendra Modi, asserting that Telangana had not made such arbitrary changes. Additionally, he asked BJP leaders Kishan Reddy and Bandi Sanjay to secure Central approval for renaming the Cherlapalli Railway Terminal after Potti Sriramulu, demonstrating genuine respect for his legacy. He also proposed that the Balkampet Nature Cure Hospital be named after former Chief Minister K Rosaiah, with a statue erected in his honor.
