Drinking cow urine can cure fever in 15 minutes : IIT Madras director Kamakoti

• Director's remarks ignite stir across Tamil Nadu

IIT Madras director Kamakoti has sparked a controversy after claiming that drinking cow urine can cure fever in 15 minutes, calling it "antibacterial" and "antifungal." His remarks, made during a recent cow puja event on the occasion of Pongal, have gone viral, leading to strong reactions from political leaders in Tamil Nadu.

Kamakoti, who was the chief guest at the Kanuma festival event in West Mambalam on January 15, spoke about the medicinal properties of cow urine, citing its ability to treat fever and prevent diseases. He shared an anecdote about a monk who, suffering from high fever, cured himself by consuming cow urine instead of seeing a doctor.

“The fever subsided within 15 minutes,” Kamakoti claimed. The director’s comments have created a stir, with political figures in Tamil Nadu reacting strongly. Congress leader Karti Chidambaram criticized Kamakoti’s statement as "thoughtless" and unscientific.

TS Elangovan of the ruling DMK party suggested that Kamakoti should be transferred to a medical college instead of staying at IIT Madras. “What will he do in IIT?” he questioned, urging his removal from the position. However, BJP Tamil Nadu chief K Annamalai defended Kamakoti, emphasizing the right to practice personal beliefs and calling for an end to the controversy to preserve the dignity of the institution.
