• State couldn’t fully utilize the Rs 4,000 crore allocated by the Centre
• Previous govt requested only Rs 26 crore, compared to Rs 46,000 crore by Kerala
• 55.30 lakh households receiving water against the claimed 70.40 lakh
Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan has urged the Central Government to extend the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) project, which is scheduled to end in January 2025, and to allocate additional funds for its implementation. Speaking at a state-level workshop on the Jal Jeevan Mission in Vijayawada on Wednesday, he emphasized the need to strengthen the project to ensure a daily supply of clean water to every household by 2025. Highlighting the ambitious goal of providing 55 liters of water per person, Pawan Kalyan said,
“The Jal Jeevan Mission, launched in August 2019, was initially focused on providing water access. Now, we must ensure the quality and consistency of the water supply.” The Deputy CM criticized the previous government for neglecting the program, stating, “Despite promises, practical implementation faced numerous challenges. Andhra Pradesh requested only Rs 26 crore, compared to Rs 46,000 crore by Kerala. As a result, the State couldn’t fully utilize the Rs 4,000 crore allocated by the Centre, leaving the water infrastructure riddled with flaws.”
Pawan Kalyan explained that under the previous administration, pipelines were laid without ensuring water availability from reservoirs. “They merely dug pits and laid pipes, neglecting the source of water supply,” he alleged. He noted that a pulse survey revealed discrepancies in water tap connections, with only 55.30 lakh households receiving water against the claimed 70.40 lakh.
The Deputy CM assured that the current coalition government, under the leadership of Chandrababu Naidu, is prioritizing water supply. “We are addressing the issues through the Amrutha Dhara scheme. The focus is on identifying problems, rectifying defects, and ensuring sustainable solutions for drinking water supply,” he said. He also highlighted water shortages in regions like Pithapuram and called for engineering officials to ensure water distribution.
“Funds are being misused in some areas, and we are taking steps to clean and repair damaged pipelines,” he said, adding that a comprehensive project report would soon be submitted to Union Jal Shakti Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat.
