Andhra Pradesh has been identified as the State most severely affected by heatwaves, recording 2,203 deaths out of the 10,617 reported across India between 2013 and 2022. This information was disclosed by Central Government in Lok Sabha, in response to a parliamentary question.
The data, provided by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), highlights the dire impact of extreme heat on the state’s population. The data revealed that along with Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, Punjab, and Bihar were the most affected States, reporting 1,485, 1,172, 1,030, and 938 deaths respectively.
Despite experiencing 219 days of heatwaves between 2014 and 2024, twice as many as Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh did not see as many fatalities. This underscores the severity of the heatwave impact on Andhra Pradesh, which recorded the highest number of casualties due to extreme heat.
This year has seen unprecedented temperatures, with several regions in North and Central India experiencing long spells of intense heatwaves. Temperatures soared above 50 degrees Celsius, breaking an 80-year record for the highest temperatures recorded in the country.
