Minister for IT and HRD Nara Lokesh assured that the coalition government would uphold the spirit of Lokayukta, even in the absence of an opposition leader in the Assembly. Presenting the Lokayukta Amendment Bill in theLegislative Council, Lokesh addressed the evolving political circumstances following the 2024 elections, emphasizing the government's commitment to democratic principles.

The amendment modifies the composition of the Lokayukta Members Selection Committee. Traditionally, the committee included the chief minister, speaker of the Assembly, home minister or any minister, leader of the opposition, and the council chairman. However, with no opposition leader in the assembly, the bill proposes a four-member committee, ensuring the Lokayukta appointment process continues uninterrupted.

Council member KS Lakshmana Rao suggested including an alternative opposition representative in the committee. Responding, minister Lokesh clarified that the amendment applies only in the absence of an opposition leader and stressed that democracy remains the foundation of all decisions. Lokesh highlighted the government’s commitment to transparency, stating, "We are entrusted with a sacred responsibility.

The spirit of Lokayukta will continue under this government." He also pointed out the absence of former Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy and other YSRCP leaders during key assembly proceedings, including the PAC elections. The bill, which addresses the appointment process for the Lokayukta chairman—typically a retired Chief Justice or High Court judge—and the Deputy Lokayukta, aims to ensure the institution's functionality despite political changes in the state.
