The midday meal scheme, currently active in government schools throughout Andhra Pradesh, will soon be extended to intermediate students in junior colleges. HRD Minister Nara Lokesh announced this decision, recalling that the scheme was previously implemented under the Telugu Desam Party in 2018 but was canceled in 2019.
With the new coalition government taking office after the 2024 elections, they aim to reinstate the scheme, which previously boosted attendance among intermediate students. During a review meeting, Lokesh noted that many poor students drop out after class 10, highlighting the need for midday meals to reduce this rate. He proposed identifying underprivileged students and encouraging them through the Sankalp program.
Additionally, lecturers will serve as caretakers, and any damaged college buildings will be repaired. The government also plans to hold a parent-teacher meeting on December 7. Lokesh emphasized that the midday meal scheme will help alleviate financial burdens and enhance educational outcomes. He also mentioned the importance of moral education and proposed awarding star ratings to government schools.
Furthermore, he instructed officials to limit activities on school grounds to job fairs only and discussed plans to streamline the curriculum from KG to PG next academic year.
