A Personal Encounter with Change In the last few years, I have witnessed the transformative power of NREGA for Andhra Pradesh's rural economy.

The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA) stands as one of the most disruptive and visionary projects in India’s history, reshaping not just the economic landscape but also the mindset of its people. Over the years, this program has become a lifeline for millions of rural Indians, offering them dignity, financial independence, and a sense of self-worth.
 
A Personal Encounter with Change In the last few years, I have witnessed the transformative power of NREGA for Andhra Pradesh's rural economy. What struck me most was how it has fundamentally changed the mindset of India’s rural population. Gone are the days when low-wage laborers (commonly referred to as “coolies”) would toil under exploitative conditions for meager pay. In South India, it has become almost impossible to find low-wage laborers—even when employers are willing to pay more. This phenomenon signals a seismic shift in the labor market, driven by the empowerment and confidence instilled by NREGA. This change brought automation in the Agri and Construction Sectors.
 
To witness the last generation of low-wage laborers standing tall, confident, was nothing short of inspiring. It’s a remarkable feeling to see individuals freed from the mental starvation, now embracing opportunities with dignity and determination. Breaking the Shackles of Economic Disparity As we delve deeper into the socio-economic fabric of India, it becomes evident that wealth concentration remains a pressing issue. The "One Percent Problem" — the disproportionate accumulation of wealth and power by a small fraction of the population — has far-reaching consequences for the rest of society.
 
This disparity perpetuates a system where opportunities, resources, and decision-making power are heavily skewed, leaving the majority struggling to make ends meet. NREGA acts as a counter-balance to this inequity. By guaranteeing 100 days of employment to rural households, it provides a safety net that empowers individuals to break free from cycles of poverty and exploitation. The programme’s impact extends beyond wages; it fosters confidence, self-reliance, and a more equitable society. The Case for Universal Basic Income (UBI) NREGA’s success underscores the potential of policies aimed at uplifting the economically disadvantaged.
 
It also lends credence to the idea of Universal Basic Income (UBI) as a means to create a more balanced world. By ensuring a basic level of income for all, UBI could free individuals from the constant stress of survival, allowing them to pursue education, entrepreneurship, or other productive endeavors.
 
While NREGA may not be a UBI programme in its purest form, it shares the fundamental goal of empowering individuals and fostering equality. Its implementation has already demonstrated how financial security can transform mindsets and promote social harmony. A Visionary Leader’s Legacy Credit for this groundbreaking initiative goes to former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, whose visionary leadership brought NREGA to life.
