In an exclusive chat with Zoom, Fatima Sana Shaikh celebrated her 33rd birthday on Saturday, and recalled working as a child actor in Kamal Haasan's Chachi 420. She revealed, "I was just a child who was having a great time being on set."
Fatima Sana Shaikh who started with a startling self-assured performance as a child actor in Kamal Haasan’s Chachi 420 transitioned to Dangal with Aamir Khan in the blink of an eye. The underrated actress who spent her birthday on January 11 hiking swimming and travelling, in an exclusive chat with Zoom, speaks of life after Dangal and life, period.
You started as a very confident child actor did you enjoy that stint especially Chachi 420?
Honestly, I didn’t think too much of it. I was just a child who was having a great time being on set. Travelling to different states, eating great food and for me, set was a playground. Oddly I still feel that. The set is still a playground for me. I am the happiest when I am on set, I love doing my scenes, it gives me so much joy.
How did Dangal change your life?
Dangal gave me an opportunity to play such a layered and complex character so early in my career. This film crossed borders and connected with so many people. It changed my whole life. I got the opportunity to work with some incredible people after that. I am now at a position where I have the privilege to choose films for myself. I am recognised for my performances and that’s gratifying.
Are you satisfied with your career so far?
I would be lying if I said yes. I am a greedy actor, and challenging myself with roles and in life in general excites me. There are so many characters I want to be and so many wonderful filmmakers I want to work with, so no, I am nowhere close to being satisfied. But I am happy with all the work that I have done so far and the people I have worked with.
What do birthdays mean to you and how did celebrate it this year?
I usually don’t like to make a big fuss around my birthday. I keep it simple. For the last few years, I have either been on a set working or literally doing nothing. However, this year I wanted to do something I really enjoy. I went for a hike with a bunch of my friends, we enjoyed a picnic by a lake and then jumped into the water. It was just so special. Fortunately, I am blessed with really wonderful friends who travelled for hours and then hiked for hours with me to celebrate my birthday.
Best memories of childhood birthdays?
Once I had spent my birthday at an amusement park which was right in our lane. It was called fantasy land, much later it was broken down and now there an are buildings there. That was the first time I had ever sat on a roller coaster. That was one of my best birthdays. Good times.
What are your dreams for the future?
There are so many. I want to continue acting till my last breath. I also want to travel the world, experience new things, meet new people, learn new skills and do things that are out of my depth.
What can we expect from you this year?
I’m really excited for 2025. There’s a whole bunch of films and an exciting series I am looking forward to releasing this year. I’ve been blessed to be able to work with some amazing directors, co stars and producers. Be it Manish Malhotra, Anurag Basu, Vivek Soni, Karan Kapadia, Dharmatic or Applause Entertainment; all of them have been such wonderful people to collaborate with. And I have had the opportunity to play such different characters.
