PM Modi to Visit Thailand for BIMSTEC Summit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will embark on a two-day visit to Thailand starting Thursday to attend the sixth BIMSTEC Summit. During the visit, PM Modi will meet Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra to discuss bilateral relations and cooperation.

At the summit, themed "BIMSTEC - Prosperous, Resilient, and Open," leaders will focus on enhancing collaboration within the BIMSTEC framework, including capacity building, trade, security, and digital connectivity.

India has actively worked on initiatives within BIMSTEC to foster regional cooperation, including strengthening maritime, physical, and digital connectivity, as well as promoting food, energy, climate, and human security.

This visit, at the invitation of the Thai government, marks the second meeting between PM Modi and Shinawatra. The leaders are expected to build on the positive momentum from PM Modi's 2019 visit, further reinforcing India’s commitment to regional cooperation.

BIMSTEC, established in June 1997, connects South and South-East Asia, with members from both regions, including Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, and Thailand.

Thailand, a maritime neighbor and key partner in India’s Act East Policy, plays a vital role in the Indo-Pacific region. Recently, India strengthened ties by sending the holy relics of Lord Buddha for a successful 25-day exposition across Thailand, symbolizing their enduring cultural and religious bonds.
