Andhra Pradesh has taken a monumental leap in India’s semiconductor ambitions with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding

Andhra Pradesh has taken a monumental leap in India’s semiconductor ambitions with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Indichip Semiconductors Limited and Japan’s Yitoa Micro Technology Limited (YMTL) to set up the country’s first private semiconductor manufacturing facility.

The Rs 14,000 crore facility, dedicated to producing Silicon Carbide (SiC) chips, will be established in the Orvakal Mega Industrial Hub, Kurnool, under the State’s recently announced Semiconductor Policy 2024, aiming to position Andhra Pradesh as a global electronics manufacturing hub. Initially, the cutting-edge fab will produce 10,000 wafers per month, scaling up to 50,000 wafers within three years to address growing demand for energy-efficient technologies, electric vehicles, and renewable energy solutions. The MoU was signed in the presence of prominent dignitaries, including IT Minister Nara Lokesh, Industries Minister T G Bharath, and top executives from Indichip and YMTL. Nara Lokesh, IT Minister, lauded the investment, calling it a testament to Andhra Pradesh’s robust infrastructure and progressive policies.

“This facility reaffirms Andhra’s place as a preferred destination for cutting-edge industries and strengthens India’s global semiconductor footprint,” he said. Industries minister T G Bharath, emphasized the project’s job-creation potential and transformative impact on ancillary industries, stating, “This initiative aligns with our vision of making Andhra Pradesh a manufacturing powerhouse.” Piyush Bichhoriya, managing director, Indichip Semiconductors, called the investment a game-changer. “Silicon Carbide chips are pivotal for global energy-efficient solutions.

This project underscores our commitment to driving India’s self-reliance in semiconductors.” Sandeep Garg, director at Indichip, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the collaboration’s role in fostering innovation and sustainability. The state government has pledged full support by allocating land, infrastructure, and ecosystem development to ensure the project's success, furthering its Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision. The fab is expected to create thousands of direct and indirect jobs, spur technological innovation, and make Andhra Pradesh a critical player in the global semiconductor industry.
