The Pollution Control Board has ordered the closure of a shrimp factory in Gurjanapalli, Karapa Mandal, owned by former Kakinada city MLA from YSR Congress Party, Dwarampudi, due to severe pollution breaches. Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan suspended officials on July 2 for negligence regarding the factory's pollution control compliance.
Following an investigation, officials identified extensive violations: untreated wastewater was being discharged into crop canals and drains, false pollution control reports were submitted online, no green belt was maintained on the 13-acre property, and an unapproved boiler and ice plant were operational on-site. Additionally, the factory reportedly released 216 kilometers worth of untreated wastewater daily and provided fraudulent electricity consumption data in relation to EDP management.
