- *Project Inspired by Ideas of Deputy Chief Minister Shri Pawan Kalyan*
The Andhra Pradesh Forest Department is launching a new initiative aimed at transforming the lifestyles of tribal communities
The Andhra Pradesh Forest Department is launching a new initiative aimed at transforming the lifestyles of tribal communities and promoting sustainable economic development. Under the guidance of Deputy Chief Minister and Minister for Forest and Environment, Shri Pawan Kalyan, a comprehensive plan is being developed to enhance the living conditions of these communities by identifying valuable forest products and implementing corporate-level marketing strategies.
As part of this initiative, the Andhra Pradesh Forest Department, the Andhra Pradesh Forest Development Corporation, and the Institute of Public Policy at the Indian School of Business (ISB) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). Representatives from these three organizations formalized the tripartite agreement at the Forest Department headquarters on Friday. Together, they will concentrate on forest product management, the application of modern technology, and improving the livelihoods of tribal people.
According to the MOU, the primary focus will be on identifying, collecting, and marketing natural seasonal products found in the forests. Rare products will be identified using digital and geospatial technology while ensuring minimal disturbance to the forest environment. This approach will facilitate the discovery of the abundant resources present in the state's forests. The project will actively involve local tribal members, with a particular emphasis on empowering tribal women economically.
The initiative seeks to enhance marketing and branding by adding value to high-quality and rare forest products, specifically excluding wood products.
Shri Chiranjeev Chowdhury, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF) and Head of Forest Force (HOFF), stated, “This agreement will be transformative for the economic development of forests. Wealth generated from forest products will significantly increase, benefitting the rural population. Currently, 40 percent of rural communities depend on forest products for their livelihoods, and they stand to gain from this agreement, leading to improved living conditions.”
Shri Ashwani Chatre, Executive Director of the Institute of Public Policy, added, “The project aims to ensure that the income generated from forest products is directed to the tribal communities that rely on these resources. The main objective is to identify forest products, establish a marketing supply chain, and create new opportunities, ultimately bringing about significant changes in the lives of the tribals.” Shri Rajendra Prasad Kazuria, Managing Director of the Andhra Pradesh Forest Development Corporation, also participated in the agreement signing ceremony.
