Former minister and veteran actor Babu Mohan officially joined the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) on Tuesday, marking his return to the party that first launched his political career. Babu Mohan, a respected figure in the Andol constituency of Medak district, expressed admiration for the late Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao as his inspiration for rejoining TDP. A photo of Babu Mohan donning the TDP insignia has been widely circulated, confirming his membership.
Babu Mohan initially entered politics under the TDP banner, securing a victory in the 1999 elections from Andol and subsequently serving as Minister of Social Welfare. He later aligned with the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), now BRS, where he won the 2004 and 2014 elections, defeating Congress stalwart Damodara Rajanarsimha. In 2018, he switched to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) after being denied a BRS ticket, but his fortunes dimmed as he lost to BRS candidate Chanti Kranti Kiran in 2018 and to Congress’s Damodara Rajanarsimha in 2023.
Meanwhile, the TDP membership drive has taken on a festive spirit across both Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. On October 26, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu relaunched the TDP’s membership registration program at the party’s central office in Mangalagiri. The initiative kicked off simultaneously in all 175 constituencies, with Andhra Pradesh TDP president Palla Srinivas paying Rs. 100 to secure the first membership, granted by Naidu himself.
