Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has directed the IIT Hyderabad team to conduct a comprehensive study on the potential impacts of the Polavaram project, currently under construction in Andhra Pradesh, on Telangana. The report, which is to be prepared within a month, will assess the ramifications of the project, particularly its effects on the state's water resources and infrastructure.
The Chief Minister issued the orders during a crucial meeting with senior officials of the Irrigation Department at the Telangana Secretariat on Saturday. Irrigation Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy and Government advisor (Irrigation department) Adityanath Das also participated in the meeting, which focused on evaluating the risks associated with the Polavaram project and its implications for Telangana. A key area of concern raised during the discussions was the potential threat to the historic Bhadrachalam temple, which has been affected by rising water levels in the past. In 2022, the temple was submerged when floodwaters of up to 27 lakh cusecs inundated the region.
Chief Minister Revanth Reddy emphasized the need for a detailed study to understand the threat the Polavaram project might pose to the temple and surrounding areas. In addition to this, officials brought the newly undertaken Godavari-Banakacharla project in Andhra Pradesh to the Chief Minister's attention. The AP government recently presented a power point presentation on the project, but Telangana officials expressed concerns, highlighting that the project was being built based on floodwater, without necessary permissions.
In response, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy instructed officials to convey Telangana's objections to the Andhra Pradesh government's chief secretary. He further directed them to take necessary actions, including sending formal letters to the Godavari River Management Board and the Union Ministry of Jal Shakti, if required, to safeguard Telangana's interests. The Chief Minister also suggested appointing a special officer to coordinate with the IIT Hyderabad team to ensure the timely preparation of the report.
