Why a Jaat Sequel Is Happening—Despite Mixed Reviews and Modest Box Office

The announcement of a sequel to Jaat—so soon after its release—has taken many by surprise. The film didn’t smash records like Gadar 2 or reach the box office heights of Jawan or Pathaan. It’s done reasonably well, just about crossing the ₹100 crore mark, but by no means can it be called a blockbuster. So why are Mythri Movie Makers moving ahead with a sequel?

Sources say director Gopichand Malineni has crafted a stronger, more impactful story this time around—one that reportedly convinced Sunny Deol to greenlight the sequel. But the announcement brings up some big questions.

Malineni is already prepping for a high-profile film with Nandamuri Balakrishna, and with the success of Veera Simha Reddy, expectations are sky-high. On the other hand, Sunny Deol’s plate is full with Border 2, Lahore 1947 (under Aamir Khan’s production), a key role as Lord Hanuman in Ramayana, and another film titled Safar. All signs point to Jaat 2 being delayed, likely beginning production only after 2026—giving Malineni some breathing room.

While Jaat wasn’t a runaway success, it found solid footing in B and C centers across North India. Its masala-heavy, South-style formula drew mixed reactions—praised by some, criticized by others for being too predictable. Still, action-packed sequences and Sunny Deol’s presence helped the film pull in respectable numbers.

Now, all eyes are on Jaat 2 to raise the bar. Fans are hoping for a shift in tone—something more Bollywood-centric, with fresh casting and treatment. And while filmmakers like A.R. Murugadoss struggled to deliver with Sikandar and Salman Khan, Gopichand Malineni managing even a modest success with Jaat is no small feat.

The sequel could be the franchise’s shot at redemption—or its defining moment. Time will tell.
