The Andhra Pradesh government has taken a decisive step in tackling the illegal smuggling of Public Distribution System (PDS) rice by ordering a CBCID inquiry. The move follows a surge in reports of illicit PDS rice movement from the State’s ports. Civil Supplies Minister Nadendla Manohar announced the government’s action, revealing that Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu and Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan are committed to thoroughly investigating the issue.
According to Manohar, a total of 1,066 cases have been filed in connection with the illegal rice smuggling activities. He pointed fingers at senior officials who were allegedly involved in facilitating this illegal trade. The minister called on the Rice Millers Association to collaborate with the State government to curb these illegal activities, ensuring the integrity of the PDS system. He reassured farmers that the government is fully committed to purchasing every grain harvested, noting that 10.59 lakh tonnes of rice have already been procured in just 10 days. The minister highlighted the government's rapid response in Uttarandhra, where 1.69 lakh metric tonnes of rice had already been bought, with Rs 229 crores deposited into farmers' accounts in just 24 hours.
Manohar also took the opportunity to address criticisms from opposition YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) leaders, stressing that the current government had made substantial progress in rice procurement, in stark contrast to the previous YSRCP regime, which only procured 2,092 metric tonnes by this time last year. Heaccused the YSRCP government of turning the ports into "smuggling havens" during their tenure. Ends//
