On Thursday, Mumbai Harbour line services were disrupted during morning peak hours due to bunching of trains, one day after an empty local train derailed near the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) in Mumbai.
The Central Railway (CR) stated that the delay occurred due to the imposition of a speed restriction of 10 kmph for local trains at the crossover point close to the CSMT station.
This was the same spot where two derailment incidents occurred in the last three days. According to CR’s chief public relations officer, Swapnil Nila, the local trains on the Harbour line were running 25 to 30 minutes behind their usual schedule due to bunching of trains.
Commuters, however, reported delays of at least 45 to 50 minutes. A railway official said that the CR had replaced the crossover point after the derailment on Monday.
But on Wednesday, an empty suburban local train derailed at the same spot while negotiating the point at 15 kmph during a trial run.
Therefore, a speed restriction of 10 kmph has been imposed at the crossover point. Harbour line is an important suburban local connectivity route to Navi Mumbai and western parts of Mumbai from South Mumbai. Approximately 10 lakh commuters travel on this corridor daily.
