The by-election for three vacant Rajya Sabha seats in Andhra Pradesh has sparked a political frenzy among NDA alliance partners, including the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), Jana Sena, and BJP. Kiran Kumar Reddy (BJP), Beeda Mastan Rao (TDP), and KNaga Babu (Jana Sena) have emerged as the top contenders, intensifying the race within the NDA alliance. The Election Commission’s notification for the by-polls has triggered intense competition, as the NDA alliance, with its overwhelming majority in the State, is poised to secure all three seats.

However, the allocation of these coveted positions among alliance partners has become a hot topic of debate. The three vacancies arose following the resignations of YSR Congress Party members Mopidevi Venkata Ramana, R Krishnaiah, and Beda Mastan Rao, all from the backward caste (BC) community. Speculation is rife over whether the NDA will retain the BC quota or opt for a different representation strategy. TDP's prospects and aspirants The TDP is reportedly assured of one seat, with names such as Beda Mastan Rao, Sana Satish, Kambhampati Rammohan Rao, and Galla Jayadev circulating as frontrunners. Sources suggest that Beda Mastan Rao, a former Rajya Sabha member and BC leader with financial clout, is the strongest contender for a four-year term seat.

Veteran leaders like Yanamala Ramakrishnudu and Ashoka Gajapathi Raju have also been floated, reflecting the internal competition within the party. Jana Sena's Bid Jana Sena, led by Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan, is eyeing one of the three seats, potentially marking its debut in the Rajya Sabha. Nagababu, Pawan Kalyan's brother and a prominent figure in the party, is seen as the top choice.

However, if Jana Sena is offered the seat with a shorter two-year term, Nagababu may withdraw, fueling speculation about other candidates stepping in. During his tour in Delhi for the last three days, Pawan Kalyan sought cooperation from BJP to get one Rajyasabha seat, according to party sources. BJP’s strategic moves The BJP is reportedly backing former Chief Minister Nallari Kiran Kumar Reddy for one seat. A strong advocate of the party's BC outreach, Kiran Kumar Reddy is believed to have secured the BJP high command’s nod. Another name is Manda Krishna Madiga, a prominent SC leader known for his ties with AP Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu. Key questions loom Out of the three seats, two carry a four-year term, while one offers a two-year tenure.

The competition is fiercest for the four-year seats, as they promise a longer influence in the upper house. The critical question remains whether the NDA will divide the seats equally among the three parties or opt for a different formula. Stakes for NDA allies The Rajya Sabha by-election offers a chance for TDP to regain its lost ground and representation in the upper house. For Jana Sena, it could mark a historic moment as the party expands its legislative presence to the Rajya Sabha. With only three days left for filing nominations, the race is in its final lap. The nominations must be submitted by November 30, adding urgency to the ongoing deliberations. As the NDA strategizes its final move, all eyes are on Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu’s decision. His choice will not only determine the alliance’s internal dynamics but also shape the political landscape in Andhra Pradesh for years to come.
