Minister for BC, EWS Welfare, Handlooms, and Textiles, S Savitha, lauded the golden era of handlooms
Minister for BC, EWS Welfare, Handlooms, and Textiles, S Savitha, lauded the golden era of handlooms during Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu’s tenure, emphasizing his unwavering support for the sector despite financial constraints. Speaking in the Legislative Assembly on Tuesday, she criticized the present government’s policies, claiming they have led to severe hardships for handloom workers. Savitha highlighted the welfare schemes implemented during Chandrababu’s tenure, including interest subsidies, a thrift scheme, and a special rebate for cooperative sectors like APCO.
She also underscored the introduction of marketing incentives, power tariff concessions for power looms, and loans under the Weaver Mudra Scheme. These measures, she said, played a pivotal role in sustaining the handloom sector. The minister alleged that the former Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy had discontinued most of these initiatives, leaving weavers in distress. She accused Jagan of only implementing the Netanna Nestham scheme, which she claimed benefited YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) loyalists rather than deserving workers. Savitha further praised Nara Lokesh’s efforts during his Yuvagalam Padayatra, mentioning the establishment of ‘Weaver Shala’ in Mangalagiri to provide year-round work for struggling weavers.
She noted that since the coalition government took office, welfare schemes have been revitalized, including old-age pensions for handloom workers and free electricity for looms. The government has also taken steps to promote the handloom sector by setting up APCO showrooms at airports, organizing exhibitions abroad, and offering training for weavers and showroom managers to adapt to modern trends.
Savitha announced plans for new clusters, including a Rs 10 crore project in Dharmavaram and collaborations with the Aditya Birla Group in multiple districts. Savitha urged people to support handloom workers by wearing handwoven garments weekly, preserving traditions, and boosting the industry’s morale.
