Rajamahendravaram: April 25: In response to ongoing worker protests that have persisted since April 2, Andhra Paper Limited (APL) has taken the unprecedented step of declaring a lockout at its Rajamahendravaram unit.

The protest, which has seen the participation of approximately 2,800 workers, centers on demands for a new wage policy agreement and elections for recognized workers’ unions. This unrest has severely disrupted operations and production at the mill.

Effective from April 24, the lockout directly impacts around 800 permanent workers, 1,200 temporary workers, and 800 daily wage earners. The decision has raised concerns among workers and residents of Rajamahendravaram city.

APL’s management, represented by executive director Mukesh Jain, attributed the lockout to the extended strike’s adverse effects. Notably, the strike involves 11 trade and workers’ unions, led by the A.P. Paper Mill Karmika Sangam.

The All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) State general secretary, G Obulesu, has condemned the lockout decision, pointing out the management’s failure to conduct elections for recognised workers’ unions despite recent talks chaired by East Godavari district collector and Labour Department officials.

As tensions persist and negotiations unfold, the fate of the Rajamahendravaram unit remains uncertain.
