Vijayawada: May 10 The advocacy group Team Swetcha, comprising young advocates, has sounded alarms regarding the deteriorating law and order situation in Andhra Pradesh.

In a meeting held here on Friday, young advocate P Raviteja delivered a powerpoint presentation, urging the people of AP to voice their concerns through their votes in the ongoing elections.

During the presentation, Raviteja highlighted instances of alleged police harassment and systemic issues within the AP government. He cited cases such as an MP facing extreme police tactics, an MLC embroiled in a murder case without displaying remorse for the victim, and a senior woman being harassed by police for expressing concerns on social media. According to Raviteja, these incidents are not isolated but indicative of broader systemic problems within the AP administration.

The analysis presented by Team Swetcha pointed to concerning trends in law and order. Crime data revealed an increase in registered cases from 106,774 in 2016 to 158,547 by 2022. Offences against the human body rose from 46,286 in 2018 to 53,951 by 2022, while economic crimes surged from 5,931 to 9,301 during the same period. Additionally, offences against property increased from 15,733 to 19,519 between 2018 and 2022.

Of particular concern were the reported atrocities against Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs), with 2,315 cases recorded against Dalits. There has also been a notable rise in cases filed against police officers, indicating growing apprehensions regarding law enforcement accountability and human rights practices. Furthermore, environmental litigation witnessed a dramatic escalation, with cases rising from 46 in 2016 to a staggering 1,294 in 2022.

Raviteja emphasised that these statistics paint a stark picture of escalating crime rates and systemic challenges. However, he also viewed these challenges as an opportunity for transformative change in Andhra Pradesh. He urged the citizens to exercise their democratic right and make their voices heard through their votes, highlighting the potential for positive change amid these pressing issues.
