Tragedy at the Royal Swedish Opera: Fine Imposed Following Fatal Fall

The Royal Swedish Opera, Sweden’s national theater for opera and ballet, has been fined 3 million kronor (approximately $350,000) after a stage technician fell to his death from a balcony while working inside the building. The incident was investigated as a work environment violation, and the prosecutor stated that the death could have been prevented. It was found that the opera house failed to properly assess the risk of the work being carried out and allowed the technician to perform it despite the risk of falling. The employee, Petter Sundelin, aged 57, succumbed to his injuries after falling on September 21. After the tragic incident, all performances and tours at the opera house were canceled.
