To Lam Confirmed as Vietnam’s President Amid Anti-Corruption Campaign

Vietnam’s National Assembly confirmed the country’s top security official, To Lam, as its new president on Wednesday.

Lam, 66, was appointed to the position after his predecessor resigned amid an ongoing anti-corruption campaign that has had a significant impact on the country’s political establishment and business elites.

While Vietnam’s presidency is largely ceremonial, experts believe that Lam’s new role puts him in a very strong position to potentially become the next communist party general secretary, which is the most important political position in the country.
