The Supreme Court is set to hear a petition regarding the Tirumala Laddu controversy, filed by YSR Congress MP Y V Subba Reddy, on October 4. The petition, which has been officially listed for a hearing, calls for the constitution of a committee under the direct supervision of the Supreme Court to investigate the alleged adulteration of the sacred prasadam.
Subba Reddy’s plea requests the appointment of a retired Supreme Court judge to lead the investigation into the controversy. His legal representative, advocate Ponnavolu Sudhakar Reddy, expressed concerns that the Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed by the Andhra Pradesh government, comprised of local police, may not conduct a transparent probe. He further alleged that the findings of the SIT could be biased in support of Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu’s claims.
The controversy erupted when Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu stated that the ghee used in the preparation of Tirumala’s Laddu prasadam was adulterated with animal fat. Subba Reddy’s counsel urged the Supreme Court to appoint experts in food technology to investigate the matter under the apex court’s supervision, ensuring an impartial inquiry that would reveal the facts behind these serious allegations. The hearing on October 4 is expected to determine whether the Supreme Court will step in to oversee the investigation and ensure the protection of the revered Laddu prasadam’s sanctity.
