External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar recently met with his Maldivian counterpart Moosa Zameer to discuss the development of India-Maldives ties. Jaishankar emphasized that the relationship between the two countries is based on “mutual interests” and “reciprocal sensitivity”. He stated that India’s approach to the Maldives is guided by the “Neighbourhood First policy” and “SAGAR (Security and Growth for all in the Region) vision”. Jaishankar also highlighted India’s development assistance to the Maldives, which includes infrastructure projects, social initiatives, and medical evacuation and health facilities.

The bilateral ties between India and the Maldives have been strained since pro-China President Mohamed Muizzu took office six months ago. Muizzu had insisted on the withdrawal of Indian military personnel operating three military platforms in the island nation. India has already withdrawn most of its military personnel, but has deputed competent Indian technical personnel to operate the three Indian aviation platforms that provide humanitarian and medical evacuation services to the people of the Maldives.

During their meeting, Jaishankar and Zameer had extensive discussions on bilateral ties and regional security issues. They discussed development partnership, ongoing capacity building and training initiatives, and opportunities for future collaboration. Both ministers expressed their commitment to continue working closely together, bilaterally and in the international arena, on priority areas of mutual interest.

The Maldivian foreign ministry expressed appreciation for India’s steadfast support in fostering and advancing economic, trade, and investment ties between the two nations, as well as for India’s committed role in the socio-economic advancement of the Maldives. Zameer’s first official visit to India is seen as a symbol of enduring friendship and shared goals between the two countries.
