SC stays Gag Order against Sharmila

The Capital News

New Delhi: May 17:  The Supreme Court of India has stayed the gag order issued by the Kadapa Court against Andhra Pradesh Congress president Sharmila, which barred her from making public statements regarding the Y S Vivekananda Reddy murder case. The Kadapa Court had passed an interim gag order on April 16, directing Sharmila, Narreddy Sunitha, and others not to discuss the case, which is currently under trial, in public forums.

Challenging the order, Sharmila filed a petition in the Supreme Court. The Court opined that the Kadapa Court’s orders were curtailing the freedom of speech and noted that the orders were issued without hearing the respondents’ version. Consequently, the Supreme Court issued notices to the respondents and adjourned the case to be heard after the court reopens following the summer vacation.
