Ramaphosa Secures Second Term as ANC Forms Historic Coalition Government

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa secured a second term on Friday after the African National Congress (ANC) party struck a late coalition deal with the main opposition and other parties. The 71-year-old Ramaphosa won convincingly in a vote against a surprise candidate, Julius Malema, the leader of the far-left Economic Freedom Fighters. This victory came after the ANC lost its 30-year parliamentary majority in a landmark election two weeks ago. Ramaphosa secured the second term with the help of lawmakers from the Democratic Alliance party and others, following a coalition agreement between the ANC and the DA just hours before the vote. This new coalition government marks the first national coalition in South Africa where no party holds a majority.
