Heavy rains, triggered by a cyclone, have wreaked havoc across Andhra Pradesh, bringing life to a standstill in several regions. Overflowing streams and bends have inundated villages, causing traffic disruptions and leaving many residents stranded. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that the downpour is expected to persist for another two to three days. Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu has been closely monitoring the situation, holding regular reviews with top officials. In light of the weather conditions, he has also canceled his scheduled trip to Orvakallu. The relentless rain has confined people to their homes, with some areas witnessing particularly intense downpours. In response, CM Naidu conducted a teleconference with ministers, the chief Secretary, the DGP, and district collectors to assess the situation.
The CM has instructed all departments to remain on high alert, emphasizing the importance of minimizing public inconvenience and addressing potential flooding. “Coordination between the Irrigation and Revenue Departments is crucial,” CM Naidu stated, underscoring the need for constant monitoring of water bodies. He also stressed that traffic in urban areas, severely affected by waterlogged roads, should be managed efficiently to avoid further disruptions. Seasonal disease concerns rise As the rains continue, the risk of water and food contamination is growing. An incident in Alluri district, where contaminated food was reported, has prompted the CM to order a thorough investigation and better medical care for those affected.
The health department has been directed to enhance efforts in combating seasonal diseases, particularly in tribal areas where fevers have already been reported. Officials have been instructed to prevent people from crossing swollen streams and canals, and to maintain constant communication through WhatsApp groups. CM Naidu also advocated the use of technology, such as drones, for effective crisis management.
The Disaster Management Department has been tasked with providing regular updates to the public and sending alert messages about heavy rains and floods to residents in affected areas. The CM reassured the public that the government stands ready to support them in these challenging times.
Pension distribution extended amid rains In light of the weather, the State government has extended the deadline for pension distribution by Secretariat employees. Despite tomorrow being a holiday, the distribution process has been expedited to ensure pensions are delivered ahead of time. However, in rain-hit areas, the distribution will continue over the next two to three days. CM Naidu expressed his condolences to the families affected by the landslide incident in Vijayawada, which claimed lives, and assured them of government support.
