Private liquor shops will officially begin operations in Andhra Pradesh from tomorrow as the State phases out government-run outlets that have been active for the last five years. The closure of these government stores marks a significant shift in the State’s liquor policy under the new excise framework introduced by the coalition government.
As part of the new policy, tenders for 3,396 liquor shops across the State were invited, and the allotment was completed yesterday using a lottery method. The new private liquor outlets are set to open their doors from 10 am tomorrow, with operating hours fixed between 10 am and 10 pm.
The tender process saw a massive response, with 89,882 applications submitted. While most of the applications came from within Andhra Pradesh, online bids were also received from States such as Telangana, Karnataka, Delhi, Maharashtra, and Uttar Pradesh, as well as from overseas, including the United States and other countries.
The AP government has also introduced a significant change by mandating digital payments in every liquor shop, reflecting the increasing trend toward cashless transactions since the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) assumed power. Digital payments in liquor shops have reportedly surged by 9 per cent every month since June. Under the new policy, premium liquor brands will be made available in all outlets across the state.
“We have ensured a smooth process for receiving applications and allotting liquor shops. Going forward, liquor sales will be strictly regulated, with all shops adhering to the 10 am to 10 pm schedule. The Excise Department has been given clear instructions to enforce these rules,” said Minister Kollu Ravindra. He further added that the tender committee would soon finalize the selection of new brands for sale across the State.
