The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders are considering the Supreme Court’s decision to allow states to create sub-categories within the Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs). Several leaders believe that this verdict could help the party reach out to the more disadvantaged sections of Dalits. The BJP has been working to build support among the numerically-weaker Scheduled Castes in states like Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, and Karnataka.
The party sees the court’s decision as an opportunity to promise these communities their fair share in government jobs and schemes. After losing some Dalit votes in the recent Lok Sabha polls, the BJP is rethinking its approach to the community. However, some in the party believe they should be careful with this issue, as opinions within the Scheduled Castes and Tribes are divided. The BJP’s ally, Lok Janshakti Party (LJP), has opposed the verdict because its support base in Bihar is unhappy with the idea of dividing the Dalit quota along caste lines.
This has made the situation more complex for the BJP. Despite this, many BJP leaders in different states have welcomed the Supreme Court judgment. They see it as a way to address the disparity within the Scheduled Castes, ensuring fair allocation of benefits for the most disadvantaged communities within the SCs.
