A postgraduate trainee doctor was raped and murdered at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital while she was on night duty last month triggering nationwide protests.
Kolkata: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), investigating the rape and murder of trainee doctor at Kolkata hospital, alleged that Tala Police Station officer-in-charge Abhijit Mandal arrived exceptionally late and accused him of hatching criminal conspiracy to divert the direction of probe. The CBI has also alleged that the former SHO allowed cremation of the body against family’s wish.
CBI claimed that the the police officer was informed about the crime at 10.03 am but he arrived at the crime scene at 11 am. However, the distance between the Tala Police Station and the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital is around 1 kilometre.

The Kolkata Police had arrested Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer, in connection with the crime. CBI, which took over the probe following Calcutta High Court’s direction, also arrested ex-principal of RG Kar College Dr Sandip Ghosh and Mandal for delay in FIR and tampering of evidence. The duo will remain in custody till September 17.
Cop Refused Postmortem, Hurried Cremation: CBI
CBI told Sealdah court that Mandal failed to cordon off the crime scene, alleging that it led to tampering of crucial evidence. The CBI highlighted the delay in filing the First Information Report (FIR) by Kolkata Police despite the information regarding crime was received at 10:03 am. Earlier, the Supreme Court had also pointed out “14-hour delay” in registering the FIR.
The CBI said that Mandal allowed cremation in “hurried manner” while the family members demanded a second autopsy. The CBI also claimed that the clothes and other belongings of accused Sanjay Roy was not seized by the Police for two days despite his arrest.
Junior Doctors Continue Protest After Failed Dialogue Attempts
After failed attempt to resolve the impasse with the state government, junior doctors continued their sit-in outside ‘Swasthya Bhavan’, the state health department headquarters in Salt Lake, for the seventh consecutive day.
“We are steadfast in our resolve to seek justice for our sister, no matter the adversity. We have spent nights on the streets in harsh conditions and inclement weather despite some of us not feeling well,” an agitating junior medic said.
