Human Metapneumovirus and Cat Virus Stir Panic in China

In China, often regarded as the origin of several deadly viruses and diseases, cats are currently facing a life-threatening viral infection known as ‘Feline Infectious Peritonitis’ (FIP). Also referred to as feline coronavirus, this viral disease exclusively affects cats, gradually spreading throughout their bodies and attacking white blood cells, ultimately becoming fatal.

Cat owners in China have expressed significant concerns regarding the spread of this virus. In response, many pet owners have reportedly started administering COVID-19 treatment drugs to infected cats, according to local media reports. Typically, the medicines used to treat FIP are extremely expensive, prompting many Chinese pet owners to turn to COVID antiviral drugs as a cost-effective alternative.

Studies have indicated that COVID-19 antiviral medications can be effective in treating Feline Infectious Peritonitis. This has led to a surge in the demand for COVID drugs among cat owners in China, who claim that their cats are recovering after using these medicines. Meanwhile, there are growing concerns over another emerging virus in China, the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), which has already caused significant alarm.
