India’s Recent Spectrum Auction: Key Insights and Results

The auction for radio waves used for mobile phone voice and data signals ended within two days on Wednesday. It generated less than 12 percent of the government’s estimated value of Rs 96,238 crore for the available spectrum. The auction offered a total of 10 GHz of spectrum ranging from 800 MHz to 26 GHz and received bids worth Rs 11,340 crore. Five rounds of bidding took place on the opening day, but not much action occurred on Wednesday, leading officials to declare the auction’s end around 11:30 AM. It was estimated that only 140-150 MHz of spectrum had been sold. The radio waves on offer were in the bands of 800 MHz, 900 MHz, 1,800 MHz, 2,100 MHz, 2,300 MHz, 2,500 MHz, 3,300 MHz, and 26 GHz. In the previous auction in 2022, over Rs 1.5 lakh crore worth of 5G telecom spectrum was sold. Jio emerged as the top bidder, acquiring nearly half of all the airwaves, followed by Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea.
